Three area stores to hire about 150 employees each.

Kohl’s Department Store is scheduled to officially launch its three Memphis-area stores next month with Southaven set for a March 5 grand opening.

The Menomonee Falls, Wisc. based retailer, which typically opens every store in a single market on the same day, also has stores opening in Cordova and Collierville.

Soft openings – which occur several days before the official opening – are also scheduled, but store officials won’t say when.

In recent weeks, a large “Coming Soon” sign has been visible in the Southaven store’s entrance, and the cars in the paved parking lot don’t appear to belong to construction workers.

Those are good signs the soft opening is near.

The local stores are in Collierville at the Galina Centro shopping center, in DeSoto County on Goodman Road east of Swinnea and in Cordova at Germantown Parkway and Interstate 40.

Kohl’s anticipates opening 47 stores during the first quarter of its fiscal year, which began Feb. 2.

The stores will be split between new markets such as Memphis and Sacramento, Calif. and existing markets.

Kohl’s operated eight stores in Tennessee. The new store in Southaven will be its first in Mississippi.

Kohl’s stores usually attract middle and upper income customers, selling mostly clothing and home items.

The stores typically employ about 150 people, said Tawn Earnest, Kohl’s public relations manager. Those jobs include department associates, cash register operators, night-time advertising set/price management, receiving, service desk, housekeeping and loss prevention associates.

The jobs will offer medical insurance and benefits that include a 401(k) plan, stock ownership and merchandise discounts.
