Waldo’s Chicken & Beer Opens Fifth Location in CityPark Development in Brentwood

Waldo’s Chicken & Beer, a Nashville-based fast-casual chicken joint, opened its doors to its newest location on Nov. 14 in CityPark Brentwood (7010 Executive Center Drive). This is the fifth Nashville-area location with others in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Kentucky and Oklahoma.

The new location is dog-friendly and offers indoor and outdoor seating, curbside pickup and catering services. It will showcase the same mouthwatering menu as all Waldo’s locations, featuring a wide array of chicken dishes from sandwiches, salads, tenders, bone-in chicken and overnight-brined wings. Guests can choose from Southern Fried or Rotisserie chicken, but everything is prepared the Waldo’s Way—cut to spec, brined overnight and hand-breaded to order. All menu items will be handmade in the kitchen daily, from the original sauces and dressings to the mac n’ cheese, collard greens and hand-cut fries.

“A location in Brentwood was a no-brainer for us,” said Mark Waldo, founder of Waldo’s Chicken and Beer. “Our goal is to be more than just a chicken restaurant, but to make a difference and be involved in the communities in which we have locations. Brentwood provides us with that opportunity, and we expect to see this location flourish, especially with our to-go and catering services for individuals, families and groups on the go.”

In addition to house-brewed tea, fresh-squeezed lemonade and other soft drinks, Waldo’s also offers an impressive selection of local, regional and imported beers, along with wine, cocktails, spiked slushies and a sneaky-good margarita. The daily happy hour, available from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. and all day Tuesdays and Sundays, includes two-for-one beers and other food and drink specials. Additionally, family meals, buckets of chicken and the “feed-the-flock” special are the perfect solution for tailgating, catering needs or easy weeknight dinners to go.

Olivia Bane, local operator and partner of Waldo’s Chicken and Beer, added, “It’s a dream come true for me to be operating a restaurant that’s essentially in my backyard. We’ve seen great success down the road in Cool Springs, and we are excited to expand deeper into the community and plant roots in Brentwood.”

Waldo’s Chicken & Beer will be open 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

SOB Restaurant Opens a Third Location in Collierville

The Commercial Appeal

By Jennifer Chandler

SOB has opened a location in Collierville.

The Memphis restaurant opened a new location in Collierville in the Schilling Farms development on Oct. 10 at 1329 W. Poplar Ave. It is the third location for the restaurant that started as “South of Beale” in Downtown Memphis.

“A lot of old regulars Downtown now have families in Collierville, so opening in this part of town seems right to us,” said Ed Cabigao, who owns the restaurant group with his wife, Brittany. “The area is growing, and we are excited to be a part of it.”

Here are three things to know about the new SOB restaurant.

A new look, with a nod to the past

“The restaurant definitely has a different aesthetic from the other two,” Ed Cabigao said. “The color palette harkens back to the original SOB with earthy tones like burnt orange and browns.”

The restaurant boasts a circular bar, as well as lots of booth seating. The restaurant also has an outdoor patio for al fresco dining.

At 3,900-square-feet, the Collierville SOB is the smallest of the three restaurants.

A new location, and a new menu

A look inside the new SOB restaurant at 1349 W. Poplar Ave. in Collierville on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023. This is the third SOB restaurant location in the Memphis area.

About three weeks ago, SOB rolled out a new menu at all its restaurants. The change was in anticipation of the Collierville opening.

“We brought back fan favorites,” Cabigao said. “The Duck Patty Melt, our Fried Pork Chop and our Gouda Mac-n-Cheese are all back.”

Since the Zaka Bowl has been such a popular menu item, Cabigao decided to add more bowls to the menu. Options now include a Shawarma Bowl (with grilled chicken) and a Carnitas Bowl (with shredded pork).

“Lola’s Bowl is a Filipino bowl with pork skewers, noodles and lumpia,” he said. “It’s inspired by what my mother used to make for us.”

From Downtown to Collierville — and what about that name?

Cabigao said when he was first approached about opening a location in Collierville, he didn’t know much about the neighborhood.

“We loved the building and the development that they are doing around it,” he said. “So, my wife Brittany and I did a lot of research and discovered that Collierville is a growing market. We decided that our concept would be well received there, so we moved forward.”

Bartender Carlos Rivas, who says he makes the best drink in Memphis, can be seen at the bar with customer Kaylea Vaughn at the new SOB restaurant at 1349 W. Poplar Ave in Collierville on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023.

The Cabigaos opened their first restaurant, South of Beale, at 361 S. Main St. in the South Main Arts District in 2009. The restaurant always had the nickname “SOB” (short of South of Beale), and when the couple opened its second location, they started officially using the name SOB for the restaurants.

In 2020, the couple opened SOB East, its second location, at 5040 Sanderlin Ave. Then in 2021, the couple moved (and expanded) their Downtown restaurant to 345 S. Main St. The new space for the flagship restaurant is in a newly renovated historic building that was once the Ambassador Hotel.

The opening of the Collierville location is the fifth new project for the couple in 2023 alone. Earlier this year the couple bought The Liquor Store concept. After a remodel at the original location, a second of The Liquor Store opened in East Memphis in June. The couple also bought The Hen House on Mendenhall and Bangkok Alley in Collierville.

SOB Collierville will be open for lunch and dinner daily and for Sunday brunch.

Biscuit Love opens in Berry Farms, adding 2nd Franklin location

What started in 2012 as a humble food truck in Franklin has grown into five storefronts across Middle Tennessee and in Alabama. Now Biscuit Love, a popular brunch spot founded by Karl and Sarah Worley, is returning to its roots and opening its newest location in Berry Farms in Franklin.

“We’re really excited to expand the Williamson County footprint with a second Franklin location,” said Sarah Worley.

The couple began their Biscuit Love journey in Franklin over a decade ago, and after expanding to downtown Franklin, the Gulch and Hillsboro Village in Nashville, and Birmingham, Alabama, they decided to come back to Franklin with a new look.

“This is the first Middle Tennessee location opening since our rebrand in 2020, so the aesthetic of this location is notably different from the other three in Nashville,” said Worley.

The new restaurant leans into diner nostalgia with a design that evokes “’brunch at Grannie’s’ with a modern flair,” according to a press release and creative director Becca Wildsmith.

Even the location lends itself to a neighborhood diner feel. Berry Farms, a mixed-use development, allows residents to work, shop and play within their own neighborhood.

“Berry Farms feels truly like a neighborhood,” said Worley. “It’s been such a fun opening getting to know the folks in the neighborhood and experiencing exactly what the developers had planned when mapping out Berry Farms.”

The menu at the new location will remain familiar to Biscuit Love fans. Everything from the popular B-Roll, biscuit cinnamon roll, to the East Nasty, chicken biscuit sandwich, will be available at the new location thanks to its culinary director, Lisa Marie White, and the Biscuit Love team.

Biscuit Love at Berry Farms held its grand opening Aug. 25 and is now open regular hours for the community to enjoy delicious breakfast dishes. Worley said she expected some excitement around the opening but was shocked at the outpouring of support they received.

“We have been incredibly humbled by the neighborhood’s support of the restaurant opening,” Worley said. “We [are] overwhelmed by how supportive the community has been.”

Check out the menu and more information about the new location at www.biscuitlove.com.

Rumble Boxing Expands Middle Tennessee Presence At McEwen Northside

Second local franchise location of celebrity-backed studio plans for late summer opening

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (May 9, 2023) – Rumble Boxing, a group fitness studio combining boxing, HIIT, metabolic conditioning and strength training, has announced its second Nashville-area location will open late this summer. Rumble is expanding to McEwen Northside, a fully integrated and walkable community developed by Boyle Investment Company, Northwood Investors and Northwood Ravin in the heart of Cool Springs.

Rumble opened its first Nashville location in the Gulch last summer, and this latest Middle Tennessee studio is one of several locations in the Southeast and Midwest opening under the leadership of co-owners Blake Baskin and Antonio Compton. At Rumble, classes combine boxing and resistance training in an inclusive, uplifting environment that welcomes all skill levels. Since its start in 2017, Rumble has expanded to more than 50 locations nationwide, and has received support from such celebrities as Kendall Jenner, David Beckham, Selena Gomez and more.

“Having grown up in Franklin, I immediately knew McEwen Northside would be a great fit for this unique workout concept,” said Baskin, co-owner of Rumble at McEwen Northside. “Boyle has a great reputation for building community at all their properties around Nashville, and we wanted to contribute to that.”

“Being a minority-owned business, we wanted to open this location in a community that reflects Rumble’s inclusivity,” said Compton, co-owner of Rumble at McEwen Northside. “Everyone who enters one of our studios is welcome, and the same is true for McEwen Northside. We are excited to add to the great foundation here.”

“We’re proud that Antonio and Blake chose to bring Rumble Boxing to McEwen Northside,” said Phil Fawcett, partner of Boyle Investment Company. “We’re confident that this dynamic workout studio will bring yet another high-quality fitness amenity to the community and will be a popular addition for residents and visitors alike.”

Rumble will host a series of free pop-up events at McEwen Northside beginning in May, offering a taste of the Rumble experience in a shortened, 30-minute variation of the signature class. Those interested can learn more here.

McEwen Northside, a Boyle Investment Company, Northwood Investors and Northwood Ravin neighborhood, is a mixed-used district in the center of Cool Springs featuring luxury apartments, restaurants, specialty retail, a hotel and interactive green spaces designed to foster community. Rumble will join several favorites, including Club Pilates, Vintage Vine 100, Fink’s Jewelers, Blue Sushi Sake Grill, Condado Tacos and more.

Bog & Barley Gets Opening Date for Its Elevated Irish Fare in East Memphis

Memphis Business Journal

Bog & Barley is scheduled to open April 7 at the Regalia Shopping Center at 6150 Poplar Ave. in the former Great Wines & Spirits space.

The restaurant —owned by DJ and Jamie Naylor of Celtic Crossing Irish Pub & Restaurant — will serve elevated Irish fare.

Reny Alfonso serves as director of culinary operations for the Brazen Restaurant Group, which owns both Celtic Crossing and Bog & Barley.

Alfonso was the chef de cuisine at Chez Philippe from 2005 to 2010. After he left Memphis, he kept in touch with DJ Naylor.

“Even when I lived here, we talked about doing something together,” Alfonso said. “So, he flew me out to Memphis to look at the space. And that’s pretty much all it took.”

Alfonso said that the menu is designed to be authentic and modern.

“We all have in our minds what traditional Irish food is. It’s not necessarily what they eat over there. I wanted to take a modern approach to a lot of this food, and even a healthier approach. We just wanted to bring it up and make it fresher and more relevant to the times,” he said.

Dishes will include a pimento cheese toastie — a Southern take on the Welsh rarebit. They’ll have fish and chips, shepherd’s pie, corned beef made in-house, and oysters raised in British Columbia.

For dessert, there will be an apple cake, which Alfonso called a play on apple cake and tarte Tatin. They will also have a lemon posset and a Guinness chocolate cake with a coffee brown butter sauce.

“I looked at classic Irish dishes and attacked them one by one,” Alfonso said.

Bog & Barley will be differentiated from Celtic Crossing by the elevated cooking techniques. The kitchen will be led by chef Joel LeMay.

The 7,100-square-foot Regalia site underwent a $2.5 million renovation and has a capacity of 250. The booths, tables, chairs, and bars were sourced from Ireland.

Alfonso stressed that Bog & Barley will not be upscale.

“We’re not trying to make it fancy. We’re just trying to bring it up,” he said. “If you go to Ireland, you have your staple pubs, which is what Celtic Crossing is. And then you have your slightly elevated ones, which is more in line to a bistro.”

The restaurant will employ 100, and they are now busy putting finishing touches in the run up to the opening.

“The location sells itself,” Alfonso said. “It’s very beautiful.”

Three Leading Retailers Open Locations at Berry Farms

Ludlow & Prime, SOCIETY Boutique, and Sugaring NYC have announced new locations at Town Center at Berry Farms, the latest phase of the sought-after walkable, retail and residential community in Franklin. Town Center has recently been completed, with 331 upscale residences, 27,182 square feet of ground-floor retail space and ample parking among nine buildings. The three new retail and restaurant tenants will occupy a combined 7,722 square feet of retail space at Town Center, bringing its retail component to approximately 90% leased.

“We wanted to respond to the community’s desire for elevated dining, additional shopping options and wellness experiences,” said Mark Traylor, director of Retail Leasing for Boyle. “We couldn’t be happier to partner with businesses that not only provide sought-after amenities but also align with our vision for serving and transforming the community.”

Ludlow & Prime is a locally owned and operated restaurant and lounge serving modern American cuisine, steak and seafood. The restaurant, a Brentwood staple since 2016, prides itself on using exceptionally fresh seafood, prime steaks and locally sourced produce that has made it a local and desired classic. Ludlow & Prime’s second Middle Tennessee location will be located at the corner across from Publix, and is set to open in early August.

“Berry Farms is a unique experience for the area. They have mastered development and structured the community to keep business flowing,” said restaurant owner Tim Kohler. “We’re excited to continue to create memories through food in a new neighborhood.”

With plans to open in March, SOCIETY Boutique will feature an elevated and personal experience, offering a range of price options that blend investment pieces and lower-priced trendy fashions. Owner and former personal stylist Andrea Hanna wants to use her experience as a stylist to help women look and feel their best. SOCIETY will be located next to the specialty foods concept Biscuit Love.

“Berry Farms offers great foot traffic, a diverse clientele and fantastic exposure to all that Society has to offer,” Hanna said. “I’m looking forward to helping women in the community look and feel their best and be their go-to spot for all their fashion needs.”

With over 100 locations nationwide, Sugaring NYC is an organic sugar waxing and self-care franchise offering full body wax, brow laminations and lash lift services. Sugaring is a natural alternative to hot waxing that contains only lemon juice, water and sugar. Sugaring NYC will open in April in Town Center next to the recently opened Beyond Physical Therapy.

“There’s so much going on at Berry Farms, and even more in the works,” said Leslie Kostamaa, franchise owner and CEO of Sugaring NYC’s Berry Farms location. “I’ve seen Franklin grow in my 24 years here, and I cannot wait to use this opportunity at Berry Farms to bring something new to the area and contribute to a flourishing community.”

Ludlow & Prime, SOCIETY Boutique, and Sugaring NYC will join more than 40 other retail, restaurant and service tenants in the Berry Farms community, including F-45 Training, FirstBank, Chick-fil-A, Whit’s Frozen Custard and Tito’s Mexican Restaurant; corporate tenants Lee Company, Aetna, Ramsey Solutions and Trexis Insurance; and many more, all in proximity to Berry Farms’ upscale and walkable residential neighborhood.

Blue Sushi Sake Grill Announces Franklin Location at McEwen Northside

Flagship Restaurant Group, a leading hospitality company with over 30 restaurants in more than a dozen markets, today announced plans to open their second Blue Sushi Sake Grill location in the Greater Nashville, Tennessee region. Blue Sushi Sake Grill, which is currently the largest sushi chain running a sustainably-sourced seafood program in partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, is set to open summer of 2023 at McEwen Northside, the 45-acre community of fully integrated retail, commercial and residential space in the heart of Cool Springs.

“Blue Sushi Sake Grill brings an elevated experience that has been a missing category of the Cool Springs area,” said Mark Traylor, director of retail leasing at Boyle Investment Company, co-developer along with Northwood Investors and Northwood Ravin of McEwen Northside. “Blue Sushi Sake Grill was already committed to the Nashville market with its first location in downtown Nashville, and we are proud they chose to have their second Tennessee location at McEwen Northside. The contemporary design of their location will emphasize the boutique brand that Blue Sushi Sake Grill encapsulates.”

Blue Sushi Sake Grill was the first of many concepts developed by Flagship Restaurant Group founders Nick Hogan, Tom Allisma, Anthony Hitchcock and Tony Gentile in 2002. There are currently 18 Blue Sushi Sake Grill restaurants, in operation, in markets ranging from Nashville, to Denver, Chicago and Austin. The sustainability-focused restaurant will maximize the sushi experience for customers by encouraging them to explore a diverse range of fresh maki, sashimi, nigiri and vegan sushi (currently, the broadest program in the country). They also serve grill items on their menu as an alternative option to enhance the Asian-inspired dishes through an Americanized lens.

“We are excited to expand our footprint in Nashville with the opening of Blue Sushi Sake Grill at McEwen Northside,” said Nick Hogan, CEO and co-owner of Flagship Restaurant Group. “We are passionate about sustainability and providing an impactful dining experience to our guests, so we are excited to continue to be part of a destination that has the same passion we do for culinary, beverage and responsible sourcing practices.”

Blue Sushi Sake Grill’s 6,000-square-foot space was specifically designed for a signature restaurant such as Blue Sushi with features like high ceilings and a dedicated patio space. The contemporary design of their McEwen Northside location will emphasize the boutique brand that Blue Sushi Sake Grill encapsulates. McEwen Northside’s Block A office space is fully leased and, with the addition of Blue Sushi Sake Grill, has 12,000 square feet of retail space available for lease.

McEwen Northside is home to leading businesses including Mitsubishi Motors North American Headquarters, Williamson, Inc., and OMNIA Partners. Other local favorites and first-to-market restaurants and retailers include Aesthetic + Wellness, Club Pilates, Condado Tacos, Fink’s Jewelers, Jeni’s Ice Cream, North Italia, Perry’s Steakhouse, Scissors and Scotch, Vintage Vine 100, and Neighbors Bar and Grill.

SOB Restaurant to Open a Collierville Location

The Commercial Appeal

By Jennifer Chandler

SOB is headed to Collierville.

The Memphis restaurant is opening a new location in Collierville in the Schilling Farms development in the spring. It will be the third location for the restaurant that started as “South of Beale” in Downtown Memphis.

“A lot of old regulars Downtown now have families in Collierville, so opening in this part of town seems right to us,” said Ed Cabigao, who owns the restaurant group with his wife, Brittany. “The area is growing, and we are excited to be a part of it.”

Ed Cabigao co-owns SOB Downtown and SOB East with his wife, Brittany (not pictured). The Cabigaos will open their third SOB restaurant in Collierville in 2023. Photographed Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020, at SOB East in Memphis.

The new restaurant will be at the intersection of Poplar Avenue and Schilling Boulevard. The restaurant space is around 4,000 square feet, just slightly smaller than the Downtown SOB. The restaurant will also have an outdoor patio.

Cabigao said he thinks that the 4,000-square-foot footprint will be “the sweet spot” for his restaurant concept. “We are making this be the prototype for any locations we may do out of town,” he said, adding that further expansion of the brand is their goal.

The building in Collierville is currently under constructions.  Cabigao said that “in the best case scenario” the restaurant will open in April.

Cabigao said SOB is launching a new menu in coming weeks.  The new menu will be served at both existing locations, as well as the new Collierville restaurant.

“We are bringing back some of our greatest hits,” said Cabigao, listing dishes like SOB’s Mushroom and Carnitas Bowl.

Aaron Petree with Retail Strategic Advisors represented SOB and Jonathan Aur Commercial Real Estate represented Boyle, the property management company and owner of Schilling Farms, in the lease deal.
